about me

My photo
Married to Nick for 13 years, with 2 children; Sabrina - 12 and Dominic - 11. I am a girlfriend through and through in that I love girly things and anything that celebrates the essence of being a woman. I love vintage, shabby chic, the country and try my best to do my bit for the environment. SO yes...we have 3 bins in our house and try our best to recycle! I believe that with everything in life, the closer we stick to nature, the better off we'll be. I would love to have a balance in life, but have learnt that balance is not always possible, so strive for significance instead, in the hopes that that will be just as meaningful, and the rest will hopefully follow.

Go Green Challenge feedback

Well here goes people. I just want to say to all of those who took up the challenge, and with true rastafarian accent, RESPECT MAAN!

Before I "report back", I'd like to just state "for the record" (.And's, gf...your blog today is so true)...here in good old South Africa...PLASTIC is KING!!! EISH!...you'd swear it was our constitutional right (and we're big on that down here) to accept and have as much plastic as possible on a daily basis!.....but onto my "Go Green Campaign"...

1. fail - well I can conclusively say that point 1 and 5 go hand in hand. I did fail, miserably I might add, at point no 5, which for me, was the most important one. I felt it was the one thing that wasn't that easy to achieve, because it requires conscious effort, and is so critical to the environment.

2. smile when you answer the phone - no problem :-)

3. praise people - I love this one....I have praised EVERYONE people - truly....in another life, I would want to be friends with me, I praised people so much...the written word, the spoken word...you name it, praise and worship all the way!.....but always keeping it real!

4. bake something for a friend - ok I am so going to have to carry this one over..... sorry Lindiwe...your tupperware is going to have to remain with me for another week!

5. decline plastic bags whenever possible - why is it, that when you decline plastic bags at the counter, they still feel the need to put something/ANYTHING in a smaller clear plastic bag (but it's for free they say!???)....and so it went....and then a new shop...absent mindedly chatting (and praising the staff!!), I let down my guard, and blow me down with a feather if she doesn't sweetly slip my parcel (in plastic packet!!!!!!!!!!! - eish!!) into my eco friendly bag, which I only noticed after I got home and unpacked....also...it helps if you do this one in tandem with your husband, because the moment you turn your back to look at the flowers, everyone (including hubby) gets plastic happy!!...mission failed...carrying this one over...

Just wanted to share this photo - one of my favourite photo's taken of "Lily", our beautiful Dutch quack duck. Unfortunately both her and Leonardo, got taken by a bird of prey, which was devastating, but particularly in her case, because we had all grown so fond of having her in our lives. She would have loved this week's weather, and on the odd occassion when she thought noone was looking, took great delight in diving into our swimming pool, and would also cruise into the house like she owned the place....! We really have missed you this week!! :-(

THIS WEEKS CHALLENGE

1. remember people's names ....????? :-/

2. grow something with a child.

3. write to someone who inspires you.

4. do something you think you are unable to do....(so many choices, so little time!)

5. turn off applicances at the mains.

  1. I'm so sorry to hear that your beloved ducks were part of the food chain. I just love ducks and am very tempted to get a pair for our garden, but what do one do with them when you go on holiday?

  2. Hi Beryldene. Thanks for the speedy feedback on your gorgeous ducks. I would not even think twice of getting a pair of ducks, but the other half is not convinced. Will have to keep on dreaming ... but you never know ... dreams do come true sometimes.

  4. Flower - REFRAIN from point no. 5 'declining plastic bags', you'll give me a HEART ATTACK as your loving friend running a PLASTIC recycling business.... what will you do to me.....? we are recycling 60 TONS's of plastic a month..... all going back into the industry (yes making more plastic bags amongst other things) and not to landfill sites? As you say there is plastic in almost EVERYTHING, also in this industry there are allot of disadvantaged people collecting plastic which they are selling to business's like us for their living....Recycling in this country in the corporate environment has grown tremendously as allot of people have jumped onto the 'recycling band wagon', you will be surprised at the number of immigrants in the recycling industry (Chinese for example in our industry) it's just the households that are being neglected....so I don't know..... point no 5 has it's pro's and con's.....

Love R (please buy the odd bag....) p.s. allot of the 'fabric' replacement bags are made from Polyprop which is 'PLASTIC' hee hee

  5. Aaaah man, that duck is so georgious and I can just picture it diving into your pool and then strutting around the house. But I suppose that is nature. Just not fair.

Well done on achieving your "Green" challenge. I need to blog what I did.
