about me

My photo
Married to Nick for 13 years, with 2 children; Sabrina - 12 and Dominic - 11. I am a girlfriend through and through in that I love girly things and anything that celebrates the essence of being a woman. I love vintage, shabby chic, the country and try my best to do my bit for the environment. SO yes...we have 3 bins in our house and try our best to recycle! I believe that with everything in life, the closer we stick to nature, the better off we'll be. I would love to have a balance in life, but have learnt that balance is not always possible, so strive for significance instead, in the hopes that that will be just as meaningful, and the rest will hopefully follow.

'Eye' am who 'eye' am!!

For those of you who pass through here today, for your daily dose of herbal tea or latte, I've posted a pic of the "happy tea cups" in my house, which have been the essence of so many wonderful afternoon tea sessions with friends and girlfriends. And as most of them are antiques bought from second hand/vintage shops, I have no doubt, if they could speak, they would have a tale or two to tell!! Sigh... to be a teacup and saucer at a tea party for girlfriends...to be privvy to the many conversations and stories told, by the women before us, and those who have shared and laughed in my home.....

My thoughts for today were inspired by events of this morning....

I think at this stage in our lives, we all have a pretty good idea of who we are, what we like and don't like and what makes us tick (that's for those of us in our thirties and up - LOL!).....and you have moments that reinforce what you already know, and reaffirm that side of you, and it's comforting. We've all heard the theory that your thirties are the time in your life when you really start getting to grips with who you are, and if I'm not mistaken, the forties are even better, because it's then that you really start celebrating and embracing these things, and accepting them - warts and all.

So this morning, as the kids and I were making our final attempts, amidst the crazy rush to evacuate the house for school - "we're late!"..... I'm embarrassed to say...that I stopped, mid dash, to apply....wait for it....MY EYE CREAM!!!!!!!...EISH....that hurt.

I know, I know!!!.... and most of you are thinking, what WAS she thinking, and WHY is she TELLING!!!!!!....but, what's worse is, I yelled to the kids, "Run to the car so long, I just need to put my eye cream on"...I swear...true story.... On realising what I had said, I pleaded with the Lord not to let either of my children REPEAT IT!! "Sabrina, why are you late??" - "Sorry Mrs Young, but my Mom just needed to put on her eye cream!!!!". I was dying...and cringing inside....and thinking...as the good old saying from the 80's goes...HOW BLIND - nooit ekse!!!????

I can hear and see you all sniggering but let's be honest, WE ALL have our thing (don't we???). And yes I do cleanse, tone, and moisturize twice a day, but in my defence, this is my quiet time with myself, when I'm face to face and can look myself in the eye, for 5 minutes - twice a day, and be present with ME. This is often when I do my silent gratitude in my head, or at night, I do a post mortem of the day's events. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, it's about "more then meets the EYE (CREAM)".

Some people spend hours in the gym, some people love their wine...or is it WHINE?? (giggle)...and others like to bake, clean obsessively, have facials, or just be lazy...whatever your thang, I think if it's uniquely you, and makes you a better person to be around, ....as Nike would say...JUST DO IT! There's a lot to be said for knowing who you are, and my personal favourite, which is not only know it, but to AUTHENTICALLY BE IT AND CELEBRATE IT. I think I've said before that I love being around people who can laugh at themselves, know who they are and are happy in their own skin - they seem to have .....substance. What a blessing.

I looked at myself in the mirror after pondering on my little "indiscretion" and thought...."eish....you really ARE A GIRLFRIEND...to the core...and that's great", and suddenly the eye cream made perfect sense, and the world was once again a happy place...

  1. Oh, I can just picture it.

Kids are just too dang honest!!!!

  2. you are such a girlfriend - i love you JUST the way you are - you are perfectly uniquely YOU. dont ever change !!! and hanks for sharing - we all have our THANG as you say and thats just awesome.

  3. Your skin is beautiful...... not a crinkle in sight (no such thing as WRINKLES in our thirties) late to school is well justified......

  4. What an uplifting post this is. Everyone who have read this is sure on their way celebrating who they are. I agree totally with you that being in your 40's is one of the best times in your life as you have already discovered who you are and what you stand for and celebrate the now. Hugs from Desire

  5. gf...I can hear you...see you....sniff...miss you. I am sure Mrs Young would understand gf...Dom's teacher on the other hand, maybe not (lol). Thanks for another inspirational post!

  6. Hey Bee ...

Had such a good (read needed) laugh ... EYE CREAM - oh, you've gotta love yourself!!!! And I agree - it is every good GF's best friend!!! Well, I don't even know if they really work but we must keep the Faith!! (or Estee Lauder et al will be out of business and in these economic times ... if the Beauty Houses go bang we're in serious trouble - forget the Banks, support the Beauty Industry!!! Tee hee ...)

I must say that I was really lucky to be able to discover the real me when I turned 30 ... As I approach 40 (eeek) I hope that I will discover even more about me ...

Thanks for the giggle and the LOVE comment on my blog.

    Love, Tracy
