about me

My photo
Married to Nick for 13 years, with 2 children; Sabrina - 12 and Dominic - 11. I am a girlfriend through and through in that I love girly things and anything that celebrates the essence of being a woman. I love vintage, shabby chic, the country and try my best to do my bit for the environment. SO yes...we have 3 bins in our house and try our best to recycle! I believe that with everything in life, the closer we stick to nature, the better off we'll be. I would love to have a balance in life, but have learnt that balance is not always possible, so strive for significance instead, in the hopes that that will be just as meaningful, and the rest will hopefully follow.

Day 1 – 2nd July - Morgan’s Bay – "Road Trip"

Day one started with a very early 3am start, (hmm – still not a morning person!) with our overexcited children admitting to having woken almost hourly, for fear of missing any of the action! The benefit of having packed the campervan the night before meant we could have our tea, and literally relocate children – still in pj’s from one bed into another! Did that take the stress out of our early morning departure OR WHAT!

At 4am 'our bus' departed, with our little people lying comfortably in the van’s double bed, watching the world go by and the sun come up, through the big back window – they were beside themselves with excitement, and I must admit that leaving together with the Bod’s (our travelling friends) made it even more novel.

The 11.5 hour trip from Hillcrest to Morgan’s Bay in East London (which we originally thought would be 8 – IGNORANCE IS BLISS!!), felt like a trip to the Midlands! The novelty of not having to stop for toilet breaks or to eat, being able to sleep comfortably and play monopoly en route, and pull over anywhere the scenic route grabs you for tea or breakfast – combined with seeing parts of South Africa we had never seen before, made that first day’s worth of traveling, just as exciting as all the places we’ve been to.

Arriving at Morgan’s Bay Beach was A GIFT in itself! Our site on the beach and river mouth was just BEAUTIFUL – and just the beach itself was like nothing I had seen in KZN. The water in the lagoon was so clear, the children could safely walk all the way to the middle.

Memorable moments:

  • our first ever roadtrip in a mobile home - I have no doubt the first of more to come!
  • making sarmies and ploghman's platters on the road - I would eventually become an expert - although the bruises on my thighs may tell a different story!..LOL!
  • watching our children have fun playing on the rocks, lagoon and on the sand dunes till dark.
  • having sundowners, complimented by a stunning sunset (the first of many ahead!)
  • watching horses gallop along the beach

I took the photo above just because I was blown away by how the lagoon turned pink at sunset...and the dunes in the background which provided hours of entertainment for our children

Above is a gorgeous sunset - as I said - one of many, that we experienced on our trip...this one at Morgan's Bay - East London area.

I just love this photo of our boy...sitting quietly....taking it all in early the following morning... it's moments like these that I wonder what's going through his mind.

  1. The colours in the sunset are stunning. Yes, you wonder what is going through their minds as they contemplate nature!! Hiring a camper van is a wonderful way to have a holiday as it is your accomodation and travel all in one and you don't have to do half the number of stops you would in a vehicle. Dereck and I did this overseas and it was great.
